Aikido of Northern Colorado
Testing Overview
Tests are scheduled two or three times a year. To prepare for testing, a student asks someone a few levels higher in rank to sponsor them. This begins a process of practicing together at regularly scheduled classes as well as extra practices sometimes. The main function of the sponsor is to help the student be fully prepared for testing, so that students will be able to demonstrate techniques and attitudes on the mat appropriate to their level of experience. Thus, a test is a more a demonstration to one's teachers and other students of their learning and meant to be a time of shared accomplishment among all rather than a competition of skills. Tests are held on Saturday mornings and are well attended, a sign of the mutual support that sustains all our classes. We are often asked if we have classes for children. At this time, we do not offer classes for younger children, although we have doneso in the past. Currently, we invite interested youth to begin practice starting at around age 12. We ask that interested parents observe a class or two with their son or daughter and sign a release, then stay to watch them practice for a few classes initially. Everyone on the mat must be alert and mindful of their surroundings at all times, willing and able to pay attention for the duration of a class, for reasons of physical safety as well as out of respect for all present to have the opportunity to practice at appropriate levels of intensity. This being said, instructors take into account the skill levels of all present.Testing requirements
